Alicia Pattillo, a multimedia journalist with a background in News reporting and radio, has been breaking barriers for Black women in the news industry. Known for her news segment that she pitched Bridging The: Divide The Roots Of Racism, Highlighting individuals in her news segment. (You can check out on 13 Action News.) She has spread awareness of the Las Vegas community struggles that do not have a voice. Helping those around her in her community is what Alicia Pattillo focuses on through her work. Alicia Pattillo started a program helping girls within her community. The woman she grew up around has led her to success, inspiring her to do what she does today. Letting her passion and skills guide, she is a role model to young girls. Her influence within the industry has led her to create her legacies Founder ForGirlsOnly, Former Radio Personality, Emmy Award-Winning Journalist Alicia Pattillo. Interviewing Alicia Pattillo through Zoom, she emulated charisma and warmth. She gave the best advice an inspiring young journalist could need. Alicia Pattillo had much to say about her journey to be a News reporter. Here are some of her answers through the zoom interview.

Q: How did you find your path to Journalism? What inspired you to pursue Journalism?

A: I’ve always loved to talk. And I’ve always loved to learn more about others. But in college, my plan was solidified. And I knew I wanted to report.

Q: Bridging The Divide is a news segment you have creative control over. How did you get the idea for the segment Bridging The Divide: Roots Of Racism. How were you able to pitch the idea for it?

A: It’s always been my dream to tell the stories of the underrepresented population. This is a passion of mine. Minorities don’t get enough coverage in many ways but this is a lane I could help in. With the current racial tensions in America finally not ignored — it was my opportunity to pitch.

This segment goes a lot deeper than just race. Listening to Alicia Pattillo talk about her segment Bridging The: Divide The Roots Of Racism. She covers Inequality issues on how to bridge the community together. She asks professionals within the Vegas community the best advice to connect people. She uses bridging as a figure of speech. She sees the divide by race. She started a conversation on way’s as a collective we can solve systematic issues for a better future.

Q: Can you please speak about ForGirlsOnly and the purpose of the program? How the program influenced the community?

A: For Girls Only is a representation of my life and the woman who poured into me when my mother passed. It is a mentorship group to help others who were once just like me, broken, hurt, and wanting to reach a dream.

Unfortunately, due to the pandemic, Alicia Pattillo hasn’t been able to Mentor girls with the annual summit she holds For Girls Only. “I would love to continue soon, even during the pandemic.” She explained inviting me to her For Girls Only program.

Q: You are an Emmy Award-Winning Journalist can you elaborate on why/how you got the award and the hard work and dedication you put into getting the award?

A: I worked on a story on a deadly and horrible fire. We submitted and I won, thank God. I’m forever grateful.

Q: Since this is for my Journalism Class at the University of Nevada Reno what advice can you give a future journalist about college?

A: Follow your heart. Always be honest and fair. Be a human always. Being kind is better than being first.

Q: Some of my classmates were curious about what Journalism students should focus on to be successful Journalists?

A: You determine what success looks like. Run your own race.

Over the year’s Alicia Pattillo has made it a goal to impact the changes on 13 Action News. Using her platform as a voice to spread awareness of avoided conversations. Alicia has changed 13 Action News making it a more progressive outlet. She has also has made it her misson to impact young girls all over. Alicia loves what she does as a journalist which is writing for the people.
